Panchkarma

Panchakarma

sec shape 1

Panchakarma is a traditional Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation therapy consisting of five main treatments that help remove toxins (Ama) from the body, balance doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), and restore overall health.

The Five Main Panchakarma Treatments

  1. Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis) – Induced vomiting to eliminate excess Kapha from the body, used for respiratory and skin disorders.
  2. Virechana (Purgation Therapy) – Herbal laxatives cleanse excess Pitta from the liver and intestines, beneficial for skin diseases, digestive issues, and liver disorders.
  3. Basti (Medicated Enema Therapy) – Herbal decoctions or oils are introduced through the rectum to cleanse excess Vata, effective for arthritis, constipation, and neurological disorders.
  4. Nasya (Nasal Cleansing Therapy) – Herbal oils or powders are administered through the nostrils to clear toxins from the head and neck, useful for sinusitis, headaches, and allergies.
  5. Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy) – A method to purify blood, used for skin disorders, hypertension, and inflammation (can be done through leech therapy or controlled blood removal).

Pre-Panchakarma Preparations (Poorva Karma)

Before the main Panchakarma treatments, the body is prepared with:

  • Snehana (Oleation Therapy) – Internal & external use of medicated oils/ghee to loosen toxins.
  • Swedana (Sudation Therapy) – Induced sweating through herbal steam baths to liquefy toxins for easy elimination.

Post-Panchakarma Rehabilitation (Paschat Karma)

  • Gradual diet transition from light food to normal diet.
  • Lifestyle modifications and Rasayana (rejuvenation) therapies.
  • Yoga & meditation for mental and physical well-being.
